    Margaret Lee Cui
    Honors Essay #2
We were asked, yet again how do the books we’ve been reading relate to that of our U.S. History and English classes. The three books we’ve read are Shane, The Call of the Wild, and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.
The first being Shane, is related to homesteading, at least that’s all we’ve honestly learned in History that I know of that in any way relates to that book. The Homestead Act is and I quote from our History books “Law that granted free public land to farmers who agree to cultivate the land for a given period of time.” But to be entirely honest I don’t remember much of that book, and the things I do remember seem to be more towards ranching than farming. Though I’m still pretty sure it does have a lot to with the Homestead Act.
The second book Call of the Wild, though it is mainly from the dog’s perspective and barely mentions it, the book mentions at the beginning of The Gold Rush and How it seemed to be becoming a huge craze, that was actually how Buck got “deported”. However based on the harsh winter climates throughout the book it seemed like they were already later in the scene than Sutter’s Fort, located near southern California I think. Buck was mainly taken up North such as Canada and Alaska, I think, I might not be altogether too accurate. I think that symbolizes that the gold deposits in California and the surrounding were already near depleted and so the men were already heading up north. Besides the Gold Rush I think The Call of the Wild also mention the disagreements by telling how John Thornton was killed by the “Yeehats” ( I think that’s how you spell it) that pretty much symbolized the aggression between the white man and the Native American, how they were still and probably always will be hostile, and how they were still having skirmishes and fights along the borders of the lands. And…. I think that was it for The Call of the Wild.
The last book was The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. That was extremely obvious when it came to the relations between the book and the class. The Civil War. The very beginning of the book begins with the end of the Civil War working along with the life Jane Pittman, demonstrating how the life of the “Negroes” had progressed when it came to life and their own freedom and what they did as free people, as well as the thing that “just can’t be”. Such as when Tee Bob fell in love with a woman who was part African American, how their marriage “could never be” and how segregation started in the minds of people before it did in law and custom. How the people, through years of slavery had already built the “solid” notion that the black people were somehow inferior to that of the white man, so they didn’t recover from that idea until years later. Not only did the book mention segregation it also told of many examples of how the white men often thought them better than that of a colored one, but mainly focused on how they were doing their absolute best to keep the “Negroes” “in their place” by mercilessly slaughtering as many as they could get away with. One huge similarity to what we learned in class and what was in the book was how though the people were indeed freed the elder of the colored people chose to stay and work on the plantations where they stayed for so long, considering they did not know how to do anything else, but the younger generation being more reckless, left home to go North and not a lot of them made it. Though I did not read of anything to do with the Underground Railroad and I really would’ve expected it by then. Didn’t the Underground Railroad already start when slavery existed? So it really should be in that book, considering how it was in it’s own way preaching about antislavery. I’m not sure on whether or not I had just simply missed anything that mentioned the Underground Railroad or if it really wasn’t mentioned. But the lack of reading about it took me by surprise. I believe that rather covers The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.
I don’t exactly recall anything else that the books could have possibly related to when it came to U.S. History class. But I believe that is all. Thank you!

ok so this is the last blog! yayerzz! next about the whole Jimmy arc. how did everyone think that he would be the "chosen one" he didn't even reach enlightenment! plus in the hayloft by age twelve, ok so he was really nice compared to everyone else when it came to treating the older people right but what else? He has no dad, and was raised by Lena, ok....... then what? he was even kicked out of his own church. and I know he was killed but what about the dude with the long head? i don't remember his name but i know he was in on the whole anti-slavery thing. did he die? because you knowhe be shunned if he didn't the fact that Jimmy was killed would probably make it look like that. how was Jimmy killed? by a bullet? i think so....... i so hated the ending though. ick. it was aweful! i really wanna know what happens now. well not so much as in D.N. angel or furuba buruma, but still, enough.

The part when she was trying to reach enlightenment, you'd honestly think that tthe whole devils and demons you'd think they'd be smart enough to do their research but no! they ssucked so badly when they were asked the things about the forms they took, i would thi nk they would at least know what ned carried after his mum died. the rocks, when did he actually stoop carrying those? and i'm kinda glad that albert cluveau died, at least he can't kill anybody else. i would have thought hat he was as mathini said " a bit off in the head" make that entirely crazy! no duh! piythium! lololololololololol. ( inside joke) hahahahahah bite him! and then jimmy came. the hayl9oft at the age of twelve. now that's icky! no really.

i started reading the last book the autobiography of miss jane pittma. i have never heard of the name ticey. but still, how is it a slave name? yeah, ok so there's no last name but how is it a slave name? and they keep on saying Luzana,is that Louisiana? i don't think it is, cuz they said about going south to mississppi at least that hunter dude. and i'm pretty sure that louisiana is is slightly northwest of Mississippi. and how could people be so mean!?!?!?!?!?!?! killing Big Laura, yeah, that was rather expected, but killing her daughter! she was still a baby, and they use the n word alot. they also used a t word, but i'll ingnore that for now. and now to be random.... go fanfiction.net! and down with dissecting clams, worms and fetal pigs! i need a new comments code, and ..... gaiaonline rules. ok commercial beak over time for the book again. blah! i found that slow dude really annoying, not necessarily annoying enough to be murdered but annoying enough to beat up. mean, i know, but very true. Ned's kinda funny though. i can't believe he hit that calier kid over the head with a rock though. why does he like those things somuch. and i think grave of the fireflies is alot sadder and more tragic than any of the books we've had to read. woo!

the dog dave, wahh1 it's so sad! i cant believe that they shot him, actually i can believe that..... it is rather logical. but still! ick! and and that female dog, dolly was it? ripped to pieces by her fellow canines! wah! waugh! ick. poor dave! they should have like brought him to a vet or something or like at least give him a check-up! but no! ick. the newest guys of that time charles and hal, it sounds like charles should be wearing acape and twisting his mustache evilly, like one of those fiends from the silent movies. it's kinda funny. so first francois and perrault and then the scotch half-breed, and noww charles, hal and mercedes. the evil villain the stupid young 'un and the damsel in distresss with no brains whatsoever. that is a great combination, its like zeus, hades and a stupid mortal priestess all over again! pffff! mercedes is nice enough but like really weak, and probably gives in pretty easily, hal and charles are both harsh, uncaring, callow and uncouth. the kind of people you want to beat up and then jump up and down on their skull until what's left or whatever they had of their brains fall out. mercedes is more like the person you would sympathize with, but still be disgusted at how useless and stupid she was.but then again i'm perfectly happy with the results of hal falling off the sled, too bad he didn't die though.

Nice title. I have to agree with you on everything. Hal and Charles are rather dumb and their arguments are odd, going from who's chopping the firewood to family members who are probably dead. I don't see why anyone would want to sympathize with Mercedes. She just acts completely useless and adds fuel to her brother and husband's arguments.

well continuing from yesterday, at least francois and pierre are relatively fair. like when some other dog tried to steal his food, reminds me of my brother, in an odd ssort of way. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. and is spitz the dog that's blind on one side or is he the one that's like real sneaky and ends up being abandoned cuz he was so hard to work with? and wait was the name of one of the humans perrault or pierre. dang. no, sol-leks wass the half blind one, and dave was the dog that was sneaky? or was that billee, no billee was the cry baby, and i think spitz is the one who is like horrible and tthe people abandon him, and he goes feral and he like comes back after some time to try and kill buck.

Just reading you try to place personality and name together is hilarious. One of the humans names is Perrault, yes Sol-leks is the one with a blind side and Billee is the cry baby, and Dave has a personality like Sol-leks and I think he gets shot because he could no longer keep up.

Buck's first two masters are Francois and Perrault, i think their french.... NO! really? pff. but before hand, it was so sad, the way they treated him 1 teasing and taunting and stuff and stuff... and the edition of the book with illustrations by kerel ketzer, is so ugly!!!!! and instead of being te red eyed devil buck is more like the lion wolf, and that's just impossible. and i realized something, it keeps on saying that buck hates the dude in the red sweater. but aren't dogs color - blind? ha ha! yay i found a mistake! it's so sad, even at the very beginning a dog is killed! wha! how inhumane! it's disgusting. it's also kind of hard to read the dialogue of francois and perrault, it's all wierd and it takes, not forever, but longer than if it was regular. dang, i have to go, reading period is getting shorter and shorter.
